my son is uncircumsized and I never did anything other than regular bathing to clean his penis. a friend of mine told me I should pull back the foreskin & clean underneath... feeling like a bad mom for having neglected this so long I did it right away! the next morning the tip of his penis was red and sore with a tiny bit of discharge!! i looked up some 'care of uncircumsized penises' online and realized I'd made a mistake. It's been about 10 days now and the soreness is gone but he still complains that his penis hurts at least once each day. it isn't always when he urinates, but often that he complains. it seems to just hurt very briefly, but sometimes makes him cry so I know it is pain and not just a weird feeling. when I pulled the foreskin back to clean it, he giggled but didn't show any feelings of pain.

should I be worried that I caused damage to his foreskin? there is no visible signs of tearing, no bleeding. Or, could I have caused a UTI? I am worried and feeling very guilty!!

I understand how you must be feeling. I honestly don’t think you’ve caused any damage since there is no rupture, no bleeding and no visible irritation. I don’t think you have been forcing anything. The pain could arise from irritation that occurred during retraction if the foreskin opening was sealed and it was impossible to retract.

It does last longer than expected and if you are so worried, you could visit a pediatrician.

I wouldn’t rule out UTI immediately although it is rarer in boys than in girls because girls have shorter urethras, so bacteria have very short way to travel to the bladder. However, bacteria could settle in urethra as well. If he had developed an UTI, I suppose his symptoms would be more noticeable and he would hurt during urination or would urinate too often.

A pediatrician could prescribe you a corticosteroid to treat the inflammation if it had occurred due to forceful retraction.
