I am 43 years old I used to take birth control pills for many years. I stopped after my third child because I got some problems. Since that time I have also been diagnosed with depression for 11 years and severe pms cramps. Could the pill have helped to prevent the PMS? Should I be still on birth control pill at age of 43?
It is quite possible the birth control pills were effective as a mood stabilizer as they provide a controlled and stable level of both estrogen and progesterone. It remains unclear as to the essential problem in PMS or PMSD. The impression is that it is related to fluctuations of progesterone levels and somehow, associated levels of serotonin. You certainly could try resuming the contraceptive pills for an attempt at mood control, even at 43.
