Contact lens consumers have been warned about using a contact lens solution, AMO Complete Moisture Plus Multi-Purpose Solution, that had been linked to a rare eye infection, Acanthamoeba keratitis.
Acanthamoeba keratitis is an eye infection that is very painful and could possibly lead to permanent vision loss.
The connection was first noticed by the Dr. Elmer Tu, an ophthalmologist from the University of Illinois-Chicago, who treated patients with Acanthamoeba keratitis.
Doctors from the University of Illinois-Chicago had treated 35 patients with the eye infection and found that 55% of the cases were using Advanced Medical Optics, the lens manufacturer’s products exclusively.
The investigators believe that the infectious agent, amoeba, does not get into the solution in the manufacturing process but that it simply does not protect against the infection.
AMO announced that they were immediately and voluntarily recalling the contact lens solution and that they were contacting retailers, customers and distributors about returning and replacement instructions.
They also reported that the recall has nothing to do with a product contamination issue and that the recall has nothing to do with their other contact lens care products.
Investigations showed how rare Acanthamoeba keratitis was by finding that only one or two out of one million of contact lens users were affected by the infection. This accounts for about 35 to 70 sufferers out of 35 million contact lens users in the US each year. |
