I am 21 years old and have always had normal menstrual cycles. I have been using NuvaRing since May (and had a normal PAP at that time too) and had my last period on October 8th. For the second time in the last two months, I am experiencing bleeding after sex. Today is the 3rd day that the bleeding has continued. The first day was very light and now I am going through 3 pantiliners a day. The blood is bright red with small clots and closer to the consistency of blood from a wound than the blood that comes out during my period. I am feeling physically uncomfortable, but not in pain. I went to the urgent care today since my Ob-Gyn is booked for several weeks and the doctor I saw thought that I was perhaps having a miscarriage and tested my urine to see if I was pregnant. The results came back negative. If I had a normal period three weeks ago and have been bleeding for 3 days, would a pregnancy test be accurate? Is it still possible that this is indeed a miscarriage? If not, what could be the cause?

Well, if you had your period three weeks ago, hcg levels wouldn't be high enough to show pregnancy yet. You can test positive on the day your period is late (which would be in another week).

Bleeding after sex could have many causes. Has the doc at the emergency checked if there was an infection, cervix inflammation, ...?

I suppose you would have to see a gyn to have this checked. It could be ovarian cysts (usually harmless) that would often cause such problems. Uterine fibroids (benign growths) would also cause this but you are too young to develop fibroids.

I hope everything turns out well. Good luck!
