Hello. I'm 34 year old mother and I'm very worried for my only son. You see, just the other day I was talking with my husband about our son’s behavior.
His teacher complained already several times on him, about how he doesn’t follow the class and how he has problems with hyperactivities. She also told us that we should take him to see a school psychiatrist because possible ADHD diagnosis. We are very scared because I've heard that misuse of Adderall, drug for ADHD, is very common. Can someone tell me anything about this?

Hello. I'm very sorry about your little son.
He really is very young to start with medications, but, his teaches was right- ADHD is a very common diagnosis these days and you shouldn’t run from it.
The thing is that Adderall really is very addictive but, if patient follows doctor’s usage instructions, these shouldn’t be any problems.
Anyway, it is rarely been misused by patient.
It becomes a serious drug in the hands of those who don’t know a lot about it.
Also, it is very dangerous drug! Misuse of Adderall can cause sudden death and serious cardiovascular events.

This is my opinion, and my opinion only. It is not to be taken as medical advice. Only a trained medical professional is qualified to give that kind of advice.

Having said that, the key here - in my opinion, is whether you have noticed any abnormal hyperactivity while your child is in your care. Boys at that age are known to be hyperactive. It's totally normal. But of course, sometimes one may become a tad bit too hyperactive. In this case, you only make mention of his teacher - not teachers, but rather one teacher making a recommendation to you. Teachers are taught how to teach. And most are very good at it. But, they are NOT generally trained in performing any sort of medical diagnosis on anybody. Therefore, this teacher is not qualified to diagnose your child in any way, shape, or form in terms of medical issues. And for her to do so is out of her scope of authority. Therefore, if you have not noticed any unual behaviors with your child, I see absolutely NO reason to have your child examined by the school's psychiatrist. I feel strongly that it is too often the case that untrained teachers are telling parents that their child may have this, or that and needs a medical diagnosis. They are essentially performing the duties of a medical professional, yet they are not qualified to do so. Further, it is also my opinion that, these days, many teachers are not willing to deal with what could be considered 'normal' behavior from a child even though that child may seem hyperactive to them. As I said, it is quite normal for a young boy to be what some consider to be hyperactive. It's normal behavior. Many teachers don't want to deal with this, and find it much easier to tell the parents that the child needs to be seen by a psychiatrist and prescribed potentially dangerous drugs in order to unnecessarily control that childs behavior - esentially making the job of the teacher easier for them. Notice the fact that she recommended that your child be seen by the 'school' psychiatrist? I believe that a 'school' psychiatrist is much more likely to prescribe medications than an ordinary child psychiatrist. These medications could be prescribed quite unnecessarily based solely upon a teachers recommendations and observations of the child in question. I feel strongly that there is a large problem in our country today with medication being prescribed way too freely to our young people, many if not most whom do not need any medication in the first place. Thus, if you have not yourself noticed any abnormal behavior, I would totally disregard this teachers recommendations, andif she doesn't like that fact, then too bad for her. Tell her that it is NOT up to her to make these kind of recommendations unless she can prove that she has been thoroughly trained in medical diagnosis and treatment. I'm 99.9% positive that she has not been. Therefore, her opinion is worthless, and should be taken with a grain of salt, so to speak.
Once again, this is only MY opinion, and nothing more than that. Take it for what its worth...

My nephew just turned eight, and has ADHD. He was very stubborn, and loud and hyper. He absolutely would not sit still. You could tell him not to do something ten times, and when he did it he would say he didnt hear you. Which granted kids say that all the time, but almost everytime my brother would whip him, Jake would always say he didnt know why he was being whipped. They actually took him and had his hearing checked, but he could hear just fine. He is a very smart kid, but was making C's and even some D's. My brother is against nearly all medicine because he has watched me go through my substance abuse issues. So that kinda made Adderall out of the question. He said that his kids would never be on medicine for that, that he would just beat them to death. But whipping after whipping and time out after time out did nothing. Finally, while my brother was at work my sister in law took Jake to the doctor and he was put on Concerta. I think that maybe you should try him on a low dose of something a lot less harsh that Ritalin or Adderall and see if it works. The last nine weeks at school, Jake was on the A honor roll. I got choked up when I found out because I was proud of my little buddy's improvement and I love him to death. Also, he is not a zombie and acting weird. He is just like all the normal little boys. He still stays in trouble half the time for getting into something, but he is so much easier to deal with, and like I said before... ALL A's hope I have helped
