Laxative use has drastically increased for the last few years. Consumer goods analysts calculated that there had been three times growth in the laxative market in the UK for the last five years and that a rise of 50% is expected within next five years.

It is certain that not all the laxatives are bought for the purpose of loosing weight but it is obvious that more and more people are opting for laxative abuse.
Laxatives are most commonly used by student girls. It has been estimated that 20% of those trying to lose weight would opt for laxatives.
The biggest problem is that the laxatives are so easy to get nowadays, within prescription on every corner in the supermarkets, from chemists or over the internet.

How does it work with laxatives or how they think it works? Well, many of those trying to lose weight binge on food, especially on sugary foods and then rely on laxatives to get the food out of their system. What they don’t know is that sugary foods are so quickly absorbed that laxatives don’t have a chance with losing weight. What laxatives can do is increase gastric motility, prevent absorption of important nutrients, vitamins and minerals and instead of causing weight loss could lead to renal failure, bowel and cardiac disorders.
