Hi. My son is 18 years old. I have noticed something weird is going on with him. I think he is ill, but he says he`s just fine. He stays up late, and when he wakes up in the morning he is tired all day long. He eats more than usual. He is always hungry. I know he is a teenager, but he really eats a lot. His eyes are always half the way down. Anyone with children close this age? What`s going on?

Hi. My daughter had the same symptoms and I`ve found out she`s been smoking pot. No big deal, I told her. I was doing the same thing when I was her age (17). She said she did it only twice and I believe her. I gave her all the info I could find about marijuana. Better to keep your child well informed. I don`t believe in forbidding stuff. If I tell her to stop doing it, she will most certainly do it again, without my knowledge. The effect was amazing! My daughter and I are now closer than ever!

Yeah, it could be that he's smoking marijuana, but in my experience, I have the same problems and i'm the same age. It's not always drugs, i think it's important to know that. You should talk to him and ask him how he's feeling. I suffer from depression and some anxiety problems and i'm the same way. I hardly sleep;on average I usually get between 4-5 hours of sleep every night, and i find it hard to cope with day to day activities. I eat a lot sometimes and other times, the thought of food alone makes me sick. He could also have a sleep disorder such as insomnia. I can't tell for sure why he is acting the way he is, but I just wanted to give you something else to think on, before you make judgments on what his problem is. Is there anything in his life going on right now that could be stressing him out?
You could also ask him to see a doctor and if he says no, then ask him why he won't. Tell him that you're worried about him and you care about him and you just want the best for him. Even if he doesn't show it, he'll appreciate you caring and as they always say, there's always a part of your son that will always listen to his mother.

I hope you get it all sorted out and everything is alright.
Best wishes.

I am only 27, but I would suggest if still goin on to brin your concerns up with a psychiatrist not a psycologist. Most people automatically point to drugs due to society. However thats not always the case. To bring it up to your son can be emotionally hurtfull to him especially if thats not the case, so i beg you not to jump and act on conclusions but facts. Focus more on the fact that you need profressional oppinion and that it may just be a sort of growing spurt. Even at 18, it's common for sleep to be disturbed and eating because his body may need more nutrience that his body may need. Ask a professional....
