Are neurological and sleeping disorders connected?

Hi, my father suffers from Alzheimer's disease. Recently, he started having difficulties sleeping. Are neurological and sleeping disorders connected?

Yes, there is a connection between neurological and sleeping disorders. This is a common problem. Alzheimer's disease is probably the reason why your father has difficulties sleeping. Many people with other neurological disorders like Parkinson's disease and progressive supranuclear palsy reported the same problem. It’s actually treating of neurological disorders that disturbs the sleeping. For example, dopamine-related drugs used for treating Parkinson's disease can cause this problem. If your father is considering meds for sleeping disorder, he should consult his doctor first, because of the possible interactions with drugs that he uses for Alzheimer's disease. Sleeping disorders can also be caused by head trauma, movement disorders, stroke, encephalitis and epilepsy.
