Are pain or swollen eyelids symptoms of endophthalmitis?

Hello! My father came back from his cataract surgery yesterday. He is sixty and he had cataract on his left eye. His doctor recommended surgery because his vision problems reached the level which prevented him to live normal and quality life. We got all instructions regarding his post operative care. I have noticed today that his eyelids are swollen and he told me he felt mild pain. Are pain and swollen eyelids symptoms of endophthalmitis?

Hello! I understand your concern since endophthalmitis is one of the most feared complications after intraocular surgery. This is a rare complication and includes symptoms such as decreased vision, pain, redness and blurred vision. It doesn’t necessarily mean your father has endophthalmitis because he feels pain and his eyelids are swollen. Treatment usually includes such things as vitrectomy, intraocular antibiotics and intraocular anti-inflammatory agents. Sometimes is difficult to preserve useful vision even with such aggressive treatment.
