My Dad has always been very healthy until now. The problem occurred when his leg thumb swelled and started to hurt him. As the days went by, swelling became bigger and he complained of the pain and was not able to walk normally. He went to a doctor who told him that he has a form of arthritis gout. He has been given colchicine are there any side effects for taking this drug long term?

This is a very serious condition that affects more men than women. This type of arthritis is caused by some enzyme defect and because of accumulation if uric acid. The problem occurs when the accumulation begin in the joint. Colchicine helps here and it does not have many side effects, those include stomach problems and allergic reactions.
