Chronic bronchitis is recurring inflammation and degeneration of the bronchial tubes. It is often part of an underlying disease process, such as asthma, cystic fibrosis, dyskinetic cilia syndrome, foreign body aspiration, or exposure to an airway irritant. A chronic or recurrent insult to the airway epithelium, such as recurrent aspiration or viral infection, may serve as an etiology of chronic bronchitis in childhood.
