Hi all. What is exactly meant by "asymptomatic shedding" or "viral shedding," used when describing one of the herpes virus phases. Also, during this "asymptomatic shedding" is herpes transmission possible??? Thanks for the answers.

The herpes virus is located in the nerve cells of an infected person. At times, the virus creeps along the nerves up to the surface of the skin which makes it visible. This process is usually referred to as "viral shedding" or, sometimes, just "shedding." During this period (shedding), the virus can be passed on to others by direct skin-to-skin contact – as the virus is in this period located on the skin. In some cases shedding is accompanied by other symptoms like herpes blisters. On the other hand, if this process (shedding) occurs with no noticeable symptoms, than it is called "asymptomatic shedding" - meaning shedding with no symptoms. Hope this answers your question.
