There are not many options for people who live in South or Southeast Los Angeles who want to eat at a restaurant or go shopping at a neighborhood grocery store. However, there are numerous fast food chains readily available to them.
Statistics from last year given by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health show that 25 % of children in Los Angeles are obese as well as 30 % of youngsters.
In order to get the residents to make healthier food choice, The City Council prevented fast-food chains from opening new outlets in a 32-square-mile area encompassing South Los Angeles, West Adams, Baldwin Hills and Leimert Park. This ban will be in effect for one year, with the possibility of two six-month extensions.
So, no new establishments, which dispense food for consumption on or off the premises and have a limited menu, items prepared in advance or prepared or heated quickly, no table orders and food served in disposable wrapping or containers, will be allowed to open.
Until now, people living in these neighborhoods didn’t have many choices. The main goal with the ban is not banning fast food but attracting a variety of community assets like full-service, sit-down restaurants and grocery stores.
What the City Council is trying to do is to get major grocery store chains and restaurants to open businesses in South L.A. district. They began work began two weeks ago on a Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market at Adams Boulevard and Central Avenue.
The new groceries and restaurants will be offered an incentive package that includes priority assistance from the agency, tax credits, discounts on electricity rates and expedited plan review by the Planning and Building and Safety departments. |
