The drug BiDil by NitroMed seems effective in treating black people with heart failure said Federal regulators yesterday. This will be the first drug approval in the US which is based on race.
A study found that black people taking the drug with other heart failure medicines were less likely to die than those given a placebo.
BiDil combines two generic drugs that appeared to help blacks in earlier research, although they failed to do the same for the general population.
Based on first FDA test results, BiDil could be safe and effective in African-American subjects suffering from heart failure.
