Okay...

After three years of begging and excruciatingly painful periods, I am finally being taken to the doctor to be put on birth control. The only problem is, my mother set up an appointment with a GP and not a gyno (I'm 18 but still a dependent on their insurance) and I don't know if a GP can prescribe me bc or not... can they?

What is the procedure for obtaining birth control? What tests do they run? I have anxiety about being pregnant (even though there should not be any reason I would be--always protected, no breaks or tears, two menstruations since last sexual escapade (boyfriend is in Oregon) and four negative HPTs), will they run a pregnancy test? What kind of birth control would be best if I want to avoid weight gain?

A GP can in fact take care of all of this for you, so no worries there.

They may do a pregnancy test but may not.. it all depends. They will give you the options, discuss the risks.. do a pap smear and set you up on whatever you choose. Ask questions. listen carefully to the risks and side-effects.

As far as avoiding weight gain.. I am not really sure... Depo is definatly out then that is for sure... I would possibly between now and then google birth control pills and then investigate eachone as far as side-effects, effectivness and any short-term and long term risks.

Just ask questions to the doctor.. if you feel uncertain or not trusting in the doctor.. then take yourself to a county or local clinic or health department and get a second opinoin... do that on your own, they normally go by income and there are many free clinics.

Good luck!!
