I have a stent inserted from bladder to kidneys, didn't know it was there (doctor didn't tell me after inserting it, and never mentioned it during visits after my hospitalization). It has now been there for several years, has already calcified, and needs to be removed immediately. I certainly don't want to have it removed by the same negligent health "unprofessional", so; I am seeking out the identity of a professional, caring, knowledgeable, experienced, health professional who might treat my body as (s)he would treat their own. I don't have much time to do this, does anyone have the name of a great urologist?

I was wondering if you delivered your baby via a C-section or gave birth naturally. My concern (and Ive asked my sister and she says she's been told its fine) is whether or not she should be pushing that hard, when she has a stent inside. Isn't that dangerous? Pls let me know about your experience and what she should look out for. I am a worry wart and I worry about her. Pls let me know your story and how you handl Sad ed the birth of your child. about 1 hour after the removal she double over in sever pain, vomiting, bleeding and could not stand up. Could the removal of the stent cause this? Also, I heard that since the stone was blocking, she could have kidney damage due to the length of time. Can anyone comment on this? Thank you,

I had a ureterscopy on 7/2/07. The stone was removed and a stent was put in. The stent was removed in the doctors office on 7/6 (it had a string for removal). The removal was uncomfortable but quick. However, about 90 minutes later I had extreme pain. I took Vicodin and when I got no relief after an hour, I called the drs office. No one was there but the receptionist who said I should go to the emergency room. I decided to wait another 15 min. in the hopes the Vicodin would start working which it did so I didn't go to the ER. The next day I did a little research and found a urologist's site with this bit of information.

"Once the stent comes out, most patients experience a recurrence of a fairly significant pain about 2-3 hours after this time. This is unavoidable and has to do with swelling of the ureter. Once you know to expect this, you can pre-medicate yourself with pain medication, plan to take it easy, and perhaps ready a hot bath for yourself to aid this discomfort. This pain usually is fleeting, but is very commonly experienced by patients just after their stent is removed so BE PREPARED!"

Why don't doctors tell you this??? I would have taken pain medication in anticipation of the pain.

One other interesting fact the urologist told me is that it takes 30 days of blockage before there is damage to the kidney. I hope this relieves your worries about your niece.

I am scheduled to have a renal ultrasound in 6 weeks. The doctor said after the procedure I had they check kidney function as there is a small chance of kidney damage (2%) doing a ureterscopy.

Good luck to all of you kidney stone sufferers. I hope to never have another stone.

i have been diagnosed with a medullary sponge kidney which holds the stones in instead of allowing them to flow freely. i have had so many lithrotripsy procedures...did not work. they recently tried the surgery where they put the tube through my back to kidney. that didn't work because the tube dislodged from kidney prior to surgery. so, i just had the procedure where they go in through "bottom", laser and remove. Stent put in place for 6 days. Thank God it wasn't longer, because that is the most annoying piece of equipment. It was so uncomfortable and it was so painful to urinate. Having stent out was horrendous (no meds). Why no meds with that experience? I must admit, it was less painful than the first time i had it done. My problem is.....I am still experiencing the frequent urge to "go". Should this still be happening? It has only been 4 days since stent was removed. Anyone?[/b]

PostPosted: 09/20/07 - 05:11    Post subject: Stent Stuck in Ureter Vote now! Reply with quote

I only had my stent in for about 2 weeks. One week prior to having the stone blasted, then one week more. Went to have the stent removed and was assured it was a 1 minute procedure.

Lidocaine was injected into the penis through the urethra and a few minutes later the scope was inserted and the Dr began to pull the stent. Half way out it got stuck. He inserted a wire into the stent and tried to straighten it out. No luck. So, here I am with about 3 inches of stent hanging out of my penis. He has me stand up and pull up my pants and walk about 50 yards to the radiology part of the clinic. They lay me out under the Xray machine and he and another Dr stick different size wires up there while watching the progress with the Xrays. No luck. They tell me the end of the stent has folded over and is hooked somehow in the ureter. The jerking and pulling were driving me insane at this point. Pain just as bad as the original kidney stone pain.

So, again, I pull up my pants and my wife drives me 3 miles to a hospital where they could put me in an operating room and give me some Versed to get me to "relax" to where they could try to get the stent out. Now, I gotta tell ya, every step was painful. That stent hanging out of me caused the stent to pull and bend and move at every step.

The Dr in the operating room at the hospital finally got enough Versed into me that I guess I didn't care how much it hurt. He said that he was able to push the stent back up the ureter and was finally able to get the kink out of it and it came out. Pushing it up a ways, (I don't know how far, but it only makes sense that he pushed it clear back to the kidney were there is a cavity large enough to allow the stent to unfold), allowed it to open up and he was able to pull it out.

I went in for a 1 minute procedure at 9am and walked out of the hospital at 5pm.

No fun.

I recently had a 6mm kidney stone removed surgically from my bladder. I was told before my surgery that my stone was .6mm and had moved from my kidney to my bladder. The doctor stated that he felt he could get in there and remove it with surgery. As I was being prepared for surgery in pre-op my doctor came in and stated to me that he would be putting a stent in place from my kidney to my bladder. That this would help to keep the urine flowing, lower risk of infection, keep me more comfortable (yeah right!!!!!!!!!)and that a simple in office procedure would be done for it to be removed. I was also told my surgery would be 1 1/2 hours and it was 2 1/2 hours. After my surgery I was informed by a nurse that I would be staying over night, but that my doctor would not be coming to see me before I was to leave the hospital. That it was their regular procudure to follow up with calling us to schedule an appointment for removal of the stent. She told me not to call them! When I asked when I should be hearing from them she assured me that it should certainly be within only a few days. A week past with terrible discomfort, blood in my urine, pain meds that made me vomit and not much that I could do. I could not function or work. I was so uncomfortable that at times it hurt to just breathe. I could hardly catch my breath at times and sleeping was impossible if not uncomfortable as well. After I week I called my doctors office and dealt with his snotty receptionist who after I explained my concerns she stated well ofcourse , you do have a stent in! I asked when I should be expecting to hear from them and she said normally not for atleast two weeks. No one told me I would be in this much pain and discomfort for such a long period of time. No one even asked what I do for a living and if I could function like this! Also, after looking on this website........no one said that removal of this stent would be possibly extremely painful during and after or had risks of complicaitons. I am so sick and tired of doctors and their vaugeness. They get away with their poor bedside manner and lack of concern for their patients more and more today. I had two teeth pulled two days before my kidney stones were dicovered and the oral surgeons office called on me twice to make sure that I was doing ok. When I told them that I thought this was wonderful of them they acted surprised that I would expect any less. Why is it that doctor's today cannot just have general care and concern for the health, safety, unerstanding and confort of their patients today. This doctor makes me sick and if I could I would take him to court. Then they wonder why they get sued so much!

Hello..I had laser surgery to remove stones on nov5th,they only could remove 1 stone as the laser broke down.I returned on the 19th nov and they blasted the other 2 stones.I have a stent in place with a string taped to the outside of my penis. The doctor told me I could remove it in 1 week.I have been taking Phenazo 200mg 3 times a day so it will not be uncomfortable to urinate.I also have been given Endocet to take if the pain becomes severe.I assume I will take 2 endocet about 1 hour before I pull the stent out.As long as I drink sufficient amounts of water then supposidly the stone fragments will pass. All I can say is I dont want to do this again.I have had 7 kidney stone operations in the past 10 years.Twice I have had PNL performed.Three they did with lithotrypsy.Twice the stones were manually removed with a basket. There must be something else that can be done.Special diets just dont help. All I can say is good luck.

PostPosted: 12/16/07 - 20:25    Post subject: after surgery Vote now! Reply with quote

I had surgery last tuesday to remove kidney stones. In september I found out I had an 11mm stone and it was located just below the kidney. I went thru 2 lithotripsy's which did NOTHING. After the second lithotripsy i searched the web for various home remedy's to remove the stone and tried everything from Olive oil and lemon juice to Coke and Asparagus (yes, someone is charging 39.95 for that little secret) anyhow, i found Uriflow. I called and they told me that my stone was big, but it would work, just take longer . Long story short, I took the Uriflow and it actually started disintegrating the stone immediately. I passed pieces the same day i started taking. After 3 weeks of taking, the stone broke in half, and moved all the way down the ureter to just above my bladder...and there they got stuck. (so it works, just don't reccommend using for large stones) So i had the surgery this past tuesday where they go in and laser the stone, remove the pieces with a basket and insert a stent. I was told the stent would be just fine and he would remove in his office in 6 days, he said it would come out like a "wet noodle". Well, i am getting the stent removed tomorrow morning and I am really worrying, now that i read these posts, but this past week has been horrible. had i known the stent would be this uncomfortable I would have never had the surgery. I would have continued taking the uriflow and taken my chances. I haven't left the house since the surgery, because it's so painful. I constantly feel like i have to urinate, even after i just went, and when i do go, it's so painful. I have the string attached and it's annoying. i have pulled on it a few times by accident when washing and I'm just miserable. The Doctor told my boyfriend it would be a slight discomfort and when i urinated it would cause a slight burning in my kidney but it would subside. I'm still waiting for that to happen. I too like other posters felt the doctor's bedside manners could use some brushing up on. I saw him for 5 minutes before surgerys and haven't seen him since, the operating room nurse gave me all my instructions and the doctor never even said goodbye...I'm trying to be optomistic, but it's almost a week before Christmas and i've been out of commission for too long. I'll come back tomorrow and post how the stent removal went.
