Bladder and kidney stent removal

Took 30 secs, no pain, just a wierd feeling in my penis, not unlike orgasm. Beat the hell out of all the other pain!

okay, i have to admit, i was worried about nothing. went in this morning to remove the stent and the above poster is right. NO pain, 30 seconds. I lost sleep last night over nothing. i will say that right now i am experiancing slight discomfort and pain on the side the stent was in, but apparantly that is normal...from the ureter swelling after it's removed. I took a pain med and i should be fine shortly!
so to all those who are worried about pain associated with removing a stent. (string attached). Don't worry, piece of cake. I still have the urgency to go and slight pain, but was told it should subside and i believe it will. will repost if any problems.

I had a stent put in on 11/16/07, It was not bad. I had a 6mm stone on the right side, I had a lithotripsy done on 11/27. That too was not bad. But this stent is driving me crazy! I go to the Dr. tomorrow and I hope he takes it out, it is very uncomfortable. It hasn't been like this the whole time, just reciently. I have had blood in my urine, Dr. gave me an antibiotic and a med called pyridium, it makes my urine look toxic! Neon yellow to orange in color YUCK!!! It leaves yellow rings in the toilet. THis has been too long. I had a stent before, it worked it's way out and I had to remove it myself, those things are long!!! Hope it never have to do this again!!! :

I'm scheduled to have lithotripsy done on Friday, and the dr said they will insert a stent then. I had no idea what a stent was, so I come here to look it up and now I'm terrified. I was under the impression that I'd have relief after the surgery and be able to stop taking the pain meds that are currently keeping me from nursing my infant daughter. How long is the stent normally left in? And just exactly what is it, and what is it's purpose?

It's purpose it to allow the particles of broken up stone to pass freely.

If you don't want it, I guess you could refuse to have it. Mine was so painful I spent two months in bed taking Pethidine. I don't think the doctors realise hoe painful they can be.

I found out last July that I had two large kidney stones equal to about an inch in size. Unfortunately they also found a very large ovarian cyst that was four inches in diameter. The kidney stones had to be put off until this January. I went to one doctor who scared me so badly that I felt I could just deal with the pain. Luckily my oncologist referred me to a wonderful urologist who wanted to first try lithotripsy before a PCNL (which the other doctor only wanted to do).

I had my procedure on 1/28/08. A stent was placed while under general anesthesia for the lithotripsy. The first week with the stent was horrible, I could only sit or lay around and finally resorted to Percocet to be able to work for only three hours. At my follow up one week later, my doctor gave me Detrol LA samples for the constant feeling of having to pee and Flomax to help the ureter to relax and allow the stones to pass more freely. Luckily both stones were not dense and were busted into dust/tiny stones.

I have since been to another follow up and on Monday will go in again to find out if my doctor will pull the stent or if I need one more lithotripsy. The stent is not bothering me nearly as much as it did in the beginning. Occasionally I'll have to sit down because it gets annoying. Sex, is out of the question, it is just too uncomfortable.

Although the stent is a really annoyance, I am SO thankful I have it. I have passed MANY stones double the size of a ballpoint pen tip. They are so jagged and hard, that if I did not have the stent in place there is no way I could even function. My recommendation, GET THE STENT.

Also, do NOT settle for just any urologist. I almost did, but I am so thankful that I was convinced not to. My doctor followed up with me like any doctor should, and explained every single part of the procedure and what to expect. As for meds, ask for samples! I filled the RX for the Detrol LA with insurance, and it was $112. One week later my doctor gave me samples that would have cost me another $112 and samples of the Flomax. And as for pain meds, they gave me Loritab but it did nothing for the kidney stone pain. I tolerate pain pretty well, but Percocet was the only med that even touched the pain.

I found this site before going through all this, and was a bit scared by what I read. I came back (stone free now!) to remind readers that not everyone has these problems, so don't worry!

I was diagnosed (by CT scan) with one large and several smaller stones eight weeks ago after an episode of "renal colic" when I thought I would die from the pain, and referred to a urologist, who was able to see me within the week (meanwhile my MD gave me Vicodin for pain). A week later I had lithiotripsy (shock waves to break up the stones) and a stent was put in place during the surgery. Sent home that day with Percocet and Pyridium, and it took about 5 days adjusting to the painkillers and the irritation of the stent before I could return to work. Yes, the stent is annoying, but necessary to help keep the passage open for the stones to pass, and to prevent backup of urine that can cause kidney damage. You have to keep drinking water, and you have the urge to urinate almost constantly. I had to strain my urine to see if stones were passing, and collect them for the doctor (to see what caused them). This is great fun while at work, with the neon orange urine (from the pyridium) staining everything. But I digress....

At my follow-up visit 10 days later, the KUB (kidney-ureter-bladder x-ray) showed there was still a stone in the kidney - about 1/3 the size - and there were still some in the tract, so we left the stent in another week. If they did not pass I would have another lithotripsy a week later. I must say, as irritating/annoying as the stent was, I did get more used to it as time passed, and gradually lowered my dose/frequency of painkillers, eventually down to half a Vicodin every four hours, though Pyridium was essential, every eight hours. And was glad to know that I wouldn't be having the intense pain of passing the stones. However, I was thrilled when a week later the KUB
showed no stones at all. The stent was removed that day in the urologist's office, with a local anesthetic. As someone else noted above, it was uncomfortable in the way a PAP is, and over quickly. I asked to see it, and was surprised how long it was (I have high kidneys). He asked if I wanted to keep it....NO WAY!!!

In the 24 hours after stent removal, I had occasional kidney and bladder spasms and pain, but not bad enough to need medication. Ten days later, I have some residual kidney soreness, but haven't taken a single painkiller since the stent was removed. Hope I never need another one, but glad the technology is there. Anyone who watched Al Swearingen's agonies on HBO's "Deadwood" series can see how horrible kidney stones were before they had these treatments.

My 15-year-old son is having stents removed from his bladder on Tuesday but they are going to put him out to do it. I just want to know how much pain he will be in afterwards.

I had surgery for a obstruction of my left renal pelvis. My Dr was amazing. everything he told me from the start was truthful. I was lucky, from what I have read some people have had bad dr's. Anyway. the surgery was not too bad. I was very sick after though. Vomiting, dizzy, and very painful. Plus I had a kidney stent and a catherter. 2 days later the catherter came out( not too bad very quick about 10 seconds). That was a huge relief for me getting that damm thing out of my penis. I left the hospital and was given percocet for the pain. The kidney stent had to be left in for 6 weeks. This was the worse part of my ordeal. The stent was very annoying. I always felt it in my bladder, was peeing every 25 minutes sometimes barley making it to the bathroom, had bloody urine and caused 2 uninary tract infections. My dr assured me it was normal and told me to just hang in there a few more weeks. The day it was to come out i was very nervous. It turned out not to be bad at all I was so glad to get the damm thing out. The worse part is the painful urination after... be prepared... burning and pain. I was told it would only last about a day, so here I am almost 12 hours after and I am hoping my next pee is not as bad as the last. i have believed everything my dr has told me so far so so I hope he is right about this
