Bleeding: How do I tell if it's a period or not?

I think I started my period but I 'm not sure if it really is. I leak in my underwear and it was a blood stain. So I wore a pad but its not even a heavy or light bleeding. I have cramps like my period! But when I wipe it's a bright red stain! Is there something wrong with me? Help!

Do you have a trusted school nurse or medical person that you can consult with? Perhaps they can shed some more light on what's happening.
