There are two similar tests called colonoscopy and sigmoidoscopy. Both of the procedures include introduction of foreign objects into your bowels and looking inside for any possible problems, infections, inflammations and growths.
The difference between colonoscopy and sigmoidoscopy is that sigmoidoscopy includes examining the colon up to the sigmoid, which is the most distal part of the colon and colonoscopy examines the whole colon.
Depending on your other symptoms, your doc will decide whether to perform colonoscopy or sigmoidoscopy.
