Bleeding during sex... from herpes?

My boyfriend and I were having sex two days ago when out of no where I see we're both covered in blood. I thought I'd gotten my period at first, but I hadn't (I know that from the blood free tampon I pulled out a few hours later). I have genital herpes and I'm not sure if it's a cut or a sore, but the blood definitely came from the outside - if I dab it with a tissue there's a little blood. Is this due to STD or did we just go at it too hard and, literally, rip me a new one?
