Bleeding in the middle of a cycle of birth control pills

I have been on the same brand of BCPs for over a year. I am with only one partner and don't use any other form of birth control. This last cycle, I started bleeding at the beginning of the third week of pills and it continued for almost a week. This was not spotting, or light bleeding.. it was the same as a normal period for me.
During the "off week" of my cycle, I did not have any bleeding at all.
My question is, would I still be protected even tho I had my period (or whatever it was) a week early? I did not miss any pills or take them late.

The EXACT thing is happening to me right now. My question that no one seems to answere is how to get my period back in sync with my BC pills. I bleed like a normal period 1 week before my placibo pills, then the week of sugar pills, nothing happens. I had been on antibiotics for a little over 5 months for a sinus infection that wouldn't clear.
