Scientists found that people who receive blood transfusion during heart surgery have increased risk of having heart attack or stroke in the future. Study lasted about 8 years and observed people who received blood transfusion. Result of the study showed that those patients who received blood transfusion experienced a three – fold increase in complications as a result of lack of oxygen to key organs. This is also what happens in a heart attack or stroke.

Researchers say that this results are not related to age of the patients or hemoglobin levels in the time of transfusion. Doctors assume that patients would have benefit from a transfusion after the surgery if they have low levels of red blood cells because of loss of blood during the surgery. This study found that sometimes this transfusion could cause more damage than benefits. Researchers are now trying to explain results and hope that it could improve results after surgery.
