U.S. researchers found that women with breast implants were nearly three times more likely to commit suicide than other women who did not get the implants.

This study reinforced several others that showed a higher suicidal risk among women who underwent breast enlargements.

Over 3,500 Swedish women with cosmetic breast implants were followed between 1965 and 1993. The researchers looked at death certificates to analyze causes of death among women with breast implants. Twenty four women were found to have had committed a suicide after an average of 19 years. This may not appear a lot but when compared to the average population; it turns to a triple risk.

It is believed that some women who get the implants may have psychiatric problems to start with possibly linked to lower self-esteem or body image disorders. There could also be a lot of different disorders. Women who underwent breast enlargement surgeries were also found to be at a tripled risk of death from alcohol and drug use.

No increase in the risk of death from breast cancer has been noticed. However, women with implants were more likely to die from lung cancer and other respiratory diseases like emphysema but this could be due to the fact that they were more likely to smoke.

No convincing evidence showed that breast implants were associated with connective tissue diseases or cancer.

Back in 2006, breast enlargement was the second-most common surgical cosmetic procedure after liposuction with 383,886 U.S. women undergoing it.
