Brown & Pinkish Vaginal Discharge and Q regarding OPK

Hello, I am 30 years old and was recently diagnosed with adenomysis based on ultrasound and symptoms in 12/2005. Prior to this diagnosis I was experiencing a brown discharge 4-5 days before my severly painful period. My husband and I have decided to try for another child. Last month I had spotting off and on accompanied with brown discharge for almost two weeks before my period. My period actually started on 01/12/06. Well, this month we had sex when I had the slippery egg white discharge ( Friday, Sat. and Sunday). After Sunday the discharge returned to sticky and normal but then I finally got a + on my ovulation predictor kit almost 2 days after the so-called "fertile" discharge stopped (the opk was positive last Tues. evening and Weds. morning & evening) so we tried for baby Weds. evening. After sex I had some bleeding and then it turned into brown discharge. (my husband is not rough or anything). I'm still having the brown discharge and now there's a pink tinge to it. I'm curious about several things: (1) Is it normal to have the "fertile" discharge before a positive opk? (2) What is considered a normal duration of brown discharge? I have never had an STD and had a normal pap in 12/2005. The discharge does not have any odors. Any help or information would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

Hi there! I am sure that “fertile” discharge can appear a few days just before the ovulation. The discharge is actually a mucus made by the cells that line the cervix.

As the ovulation approaches, levels of the hormones start to rise and the mucus amount increases. So, the mucus doesn’t necessarily becomes excessive at the exact time of the ovulation.

I haven’t had any brown discharge with my first pregnancy. Could you please let me know what this brown discharge refers to? I am also planning to have another child in the near future, so this may be helpful. I would appreciate it! Thanks so much

My sister suffers from endometriosis, which is quite similar to adenomysis. How are you coping with the symptoms? My sister has always had incredibly painful periods and she isn’t even able to enjoy sex that much because she often experiences pain. Also, her doc said that she has smaller chances of getting pregnant.
Did your problem regarding adenomysis start before after or your delivery? Did you have problems getting pregnant?

Thank you so much for your response. This is our first time actually trying to have a child. Our first two were surprises ( 11 and 5). Well, in my second pregnancy I had spotting and brown discharge (old blood) as I was trying to miscarry. The bleeding would start and stop, start and stop, especially during the first 12 weeks. My Dr prescribed progesterone suppositories and other meds until the pregnancy seemed stable. It was a horrid worry all the time never knowing if we would give birth to a healthy baby.

My adenomysis did not occur for several years after my second child. I thought something was wrong with me to have such a hard time each month. The heating pad became my best-friend for 2-3 days until I could stand it. It seemed to progess each month to a different level and the brown discharge started occuring every month 4-5 days prior to my menustration beginning. I actually thought that my thyroid med needed to be adjusted - my dr told me that having brown discharge prior to your period within a few days was "old blood" and not to worry about it. But then in October of 2005 I had excrutiating pain in my right side, vomiting, couldn't eat, blood pressure was high, and weird twinge feelings near my right ovary - I went to my general dr and they thought I had appendicitis. I went through all the tests, ct scans, blood work and they found nothing. So, I called my gyno and had an appointment. He didn't agree with all of the other dr's testing and told me that female related problems will not typically show on a ct scan so he ordered a transvaginal ultrasound. I still remember that during the ultrasound the tech asked me if I had a lot of clotting and cramping during my cycle. I told her definitely, that the clotting is so heavy that a tampon wouldn't work, it would pass right through so I also had to use a pad, changing every hour. When the report came in I scheduled an appointment with my gyno to discuss. Basically all they can offer is pain meds or hysterectomy. He told me that if I wanted more children that now is the time because if I wait the worse it will be. I can only empathise with your sister, I know the pain. But I have heard a lot about endo and possible fertility options. Even my gyno told me about a place in Atlanta, GA that specializes in nothing but endo and fertility.

Well, I guess a good thing is that the brown and pinkish discharge has finally stopped as of yesterday! I'm now hopeful. I will know for sure next Weds.
