Hi, I am having bunion surgery done next Thursday, so a little under a week away. Iam unsure of the recovery time if anyone can help me out. Do you normally wear a cast or a boot and does it require crutches? How long will I be immobile for the 1 foot surgery? I will have my other foot done next!!! Thanks if you can help!!

I'm due to have bunion surgery in 4 months and just wondering how yours went? Did you get scars? Do your feet look relatively normal? How long were you immobile for? Did you have it done on both your feet?

Cheers,

Sophie

I had bunion surgery on both my feet at the same time just a little over a year ago. The surgery went great, I was immobile for about 3 days and slowly got back on my feet fully after about 3 weeks. I was off work for 8 weeks. My feet look very normal now with minimal scars. Both my feet were severly affected by the bunions and major surgery was performed.
I had carpral tunnel surgery on both my hands at the same time and it was MUCH harder to do with out my hands then my feet and recovery of my feet was a lot faster.
Do not be afraid.
I will be thinking about you!

When I was 17 I had hammer toe correction, bunion removal, and gastroc lengthening done on both feet/ legs. My doctor had me do one at a time due to the pain factor. I am not here to dissuade anyone from having surgery... but you SHOULD NOT have this surgery for cosmetic reasons. I had a few complications and went under the knife with a top surgeon and a team of residents. My surgeon was EXCELLENT and checked with me numerous times over to make certain that I was not only doing this for cosmetic purposes. My problem was that I am a 6'1 female basketball player and i was suffering from horrible foot pains and chronic ankle spraining. Now, 7 years later, I am doing REALLY well. I have undergone knee surgery, hip surgery, ENT surgery, concussions, and broken bones... NO pain has compared to this surgery. I spent one month for each leg in a plaster cast and at 6 weeks had the pins from my feet removed. Then it was a total of 6 months physical therapy. My scars for the bunion removal are hardly noticeablel however, the gastroc lengthening and hammer toe corrective scars are fairly noticeable. I also have lost all sensation beginning about 3 inches above my ankle and extending down the outisde of my foot. OVERALL, the surgery for me was worth it. Feet are ugly. It distresses me to see so many girls wearing stilettos and pointy-toed shoes for these women will all be requiring surgery just to walk in their 40s. I wish anyone who chooses to go forward with the surgery all the best. I just hope and pray that my hard work has paid off and I will not have to go under the knife again. God bless.

Hi, I am having a bunionectomy this Friday. I have read a lot about the prosecure and recovery. I get a lot of different answers, I am very apprehensive, but need to do something. I had the shots and it helped for about a year. I do walk a lot and my big toe pushes on my second, causing a lot of pain. I guess I have to have it done now, sense it is scheduled. I can't imagine accupuncture can actually cure a bonion, very interesting.
Wish me Luck

Hi,

Im a 29 year old women. I have had bunions all my life. 5 years ago i had an op where my doctor tried to remove the scaring of the bunions. Its the dark discolouration of the skin, like black dots on your toes. Anyway that didnt help and i now foud myself going back to him. I will have bunions removed from 3 of my toes and again the dark skin on my toes. Honestly, i know people have worst issues but i have been living with thuis emabarrassment all ly life. I cannot wera sandals, i place plasters all over my toes if i do, i lie to people that i got hurt or some excuse. I cry again and again over this. i getting married next year and i still hide my toes away from my fiancee. I told him about my problem and he said its nothing but I STILL HAVE A DEEP DEEP CONCIOUS. Can someone please tell me what scar tissue i can use that will help the healing process. Thank you Lynn

I had bunion surgery on my left foot two months ago and had the same surgery on my right foot one week ago. So far everything has gone great. My doctor told me to stay in bed (except for going to the bathroom) with my foot elevated and using cold therapy for the entire first week. After the first checkup at one week, I was allowed to move around more as long as I was wearing a big black protective boot. I did not put any weight on my foot at all for the first two weeks and stayed on crutches the whole time. After the second checkup at two weeks post-surgery, I was released to physical therapy and went three times a week for four weeks. I also did exercises at home every day. When I go back for my right foot, they'll also do more physical therapy on my left foot at the same time. After four weeks of physical therapy, during which time I was wearing a surgical shoe and keeping my foot wrapped with an ace bandage, I was finally released to start wearing good quality running shoes. I'm supposed to wear those for the next few months, even around home, and I've been told to not go barefoot because my foot needs the arch support that the shoes provide.

My doctor does a million of these and I was very concerned about all the horror stories you hear about bunion surgery. He said that the main cause of problems is that people don't give themselves enough time to heal and they try to get back on their feet too soon. I know it sounds a little extreme to take so much time off (I'm working from home and officing from my bed the entire time I'm on crutches), but I'm convinced that this is a big reason why I'm healing so well.

Also wanted to mention that my first scar is healing well and I don't expect it to be unsightly -- however remember that scars need extra protection from the sun!

Good luck everybody!

I had the surgery now 4 wks ago on July 31..st... hardly can see the scars..but still problems walking by days end. You absolutely need help for the first week esp. first 96 hrs... your only trip is to the bathroom. faliure to keep your feet up = pain... I had to ride in the back seat with them up until end of 3rd week.. To try an walk on your heels only means that your big toe wants to take over the balancing act... With both feet -even crutches were no help. BUT my feet look great!... Still some swelling so finding something to wear is the real challenge. I have worked out something there....and hope to paten it now for other recovery patients.
If you need both feet done... do it at the same time..or you will never return for the other as the down time...is a good 6-7 weeks.
They like to do both feet for another reason...It becomes very diff. to buy footware with only the one foot nicely shaved down... so that was reason enuf for me. Good Luck... I have some great pictures I took along recovery but not sure how to share them? If you know...let me know
