Researchers say that women who drink a lot of coffee during the pregnancy have increased risk of miscarriage. Researchers advise women to cut out entirely caffeine or reduce it. Results of the investigation showed that pregnant women who consume 200 mg of caffeine a day may double the risk of miscarriage. It would be the best for women to try to give up caffeine for at least the first three or four months of pregnancy but if they can’t, doctors advise women to cut intake to one cup per day or to switch to decaf. Experts say that small amount of caffeine is safe and although some previous studies linked higher amounts of caffeine to miscarriage and low birth weight there is no solid proof that caffeine caused these problems. Before these findings are confirmed, doctors advise women to limit their caffeine intake during pregnancy.
During the study about one quarter of investigated women said they used no caffeine and 12% of them had miscarriages. Other results showed that miscarriage rate was about 25% in women who consumed 200 mg of caffeine per day. Researchers say that increased risk was associated with caffeine and not with some other risk factors such as mother’s age or smoking.
Another interesting fact was found during the research. It seems that women who have morning sickness are less likely to have miscarriage than women who feel fine. Some researchers linked morning sickness with caffeine intake. They say that if women feel ill they consume less caffeine and they are less likely to miscarry because they avoid caffeine. This finding is not yet confirmed and many scientists said that most miscarriages are result of chromosomal abnormalities and that there’s no solid proof that caffeine causes miscarriages.
However, doctors claim that smoking, Chlamydia infections and increasing maternal age are stronger risk factors for miscarriages than caffeine. |
