My boyfriend has just been diagnosed with herniated disc. I think T2 is herniated. I am so worried about him. He is only 29 and I think that he is too young to have spine surgery. Am I right? Can a herniated disc go away by it self?

When a herniated disc occurs in the thoracic spine it can be extremely serious, luckily, they are not nearly as common as in the lumbar spine. Just because a disc has herniated does not necessarily mean that he will need to undergo surgery. The treatment of a herniated disc depends on the symptoms he is experiencing. It also depends on whether the symptoms are getting steadily worse or whether they are getting better, so if the symptoms are getting steadily worse, his doctor may be more likely to suggest surgery. If the symptoms are getting better, he may suggest watching and waiting to see if the symptoms go away. I don’t think that herniation can go by it self, but many people, who initially have problems due to a herniated disc, find that they completely resolve over several weeks or months.

| I am 23 years old and have had a herniated disc in my L4-5 area. I have had surgery on this 3 times and might be looking towards my 4th. I have 2 herniated disc at this very moment but they're not causing leg pain so they're looking at doing injections into my joints and possibly nerve blocks. The surgery is serious but to be honest is not that big of a deal. I was off work for about a month and then back to normal after a few weeks of physical therapy. I know it's scary being so young and from my experience you will probably always have some type of problem or pain, but I am still physically active and do things I use to. I hope everything goes well. Good Luck! |

I am 28yrs old, I have my first herniated disk when I was 16. I had survey to correct that in 1996- the pain was so bad I couldn't walk to the bathroom without anyones help. That area was L4-L5.
I had most recent surgery last June- this time I herniated L5-S1; I have to say that was the worse pain I've ever felt in my life. (I have a 3 yrd old daughter & I'll tell you I'll have 20 more kids at ONE time before I feel that pain again.)
The most recent time was alot harder because the pain was in a different area & a different kind of pain- the docs didn't want to do surgery because of the previous surgery & it was a different doctor. I lived in EXTREME pain for over 30 days. They tried the injections that never worked; I literally laid up in the bed popping high dose percot every 4 hours. It was a very very TOUGH time for me.
The only I can say is YOU DONT want things to get as bad as mine were. Sometimes the pain was so bad I didn't want to see beyond the surgery- I would cry my eyes out just to walk 10 steps to the bathroom; then would have to sit on the toilet- SCREAMING IN PAIN; I couldnt stand up the shower, I had to take baths- THEN GETTING OUT OF THE TUB was even worse !! |
