My neighbour is pregnant and I heard that she said once that she’s afraid that her child would have albinism, because her father had it. I’m not sure that I know exactly what albinism is. So, can somebody explain to me that, please? And tell me also can albinism be prevented?
Albinism is an inherited problem caused by a flaw in one or more of the genes that are responsible for directing the eyes and skin to make melanin (pigment). As a result, little or no pigment is made, and the child's skin, eyes and hair may be colorless. Because albinism is an inherited condition present at birth, genetic counseling is very important to prevent further occurrences of the condition.
