Hello, guys. I suffer from rheumatoid arthritis and my doctor would like to introduce immunosuppresives into my therapy. I am not a diabetic, but I am worried that these medications could cause hyperglycemia. I would like to know whether this is true. I have a history of diabetes in my family. Thanks in advance.

Hi. Immunosuppressives are medications that are used to impair your immune system. You probably wonder why anyone would like to do that. In autoimmune diseases one’s immune system turns against its own organs and antigens. That is why immunosuppressives are used with these diseases. Unfortunately, they can cause hyperglycemia. They can provoke secondary diabetes even with the people that haven’t been diabetics before. You should consult with your doctor about this. In some researches immunosuppressives were studied as a therapy for diabetes type 1. I hope you’ll be all right. Bye!
