Can you have a negative ANA test and still have Lupus?

Hi. I`m 37 yo M and have a problem with high blood pressure and muscular pain. My doctor has told me that I have a lupus, and I did ANA test, but it was negative. Still, my doctor is saying that it is lupus, and I think that I will go for a second opinion. I mean, can you have a negative ANA test and still have a lupus?

Hi. Most of the persons (95-98%) with lupus have a positive ANA test. But, the rest of people can have a negative ANA test, and still have lupus. So, you can have symptoms of lupus and a negative ANA test and that is why you should be very carefull. Patients with lupus and a negative ANA test usually have a positive test for anti-Ro or anti-La. A second opinion is always an option. You should contact a Lupus Foundation and learn more about that disease. Lupus doesn`t need some careful attention – there are some minor life-style changes that you should follow (avoid direct sunlight). Many patients with lupus are leading a normal, active life.
