New research found that a technique for hemodialysis where a catheter is inserted through large vessels (also known as central venus catheters technique)may actually harm patients diagnosed with kidney disease.

Reports show that this kind of treatment may block the blood flow in the vessel and that causes obstruction of blood coming to heart. This serious complication is called SVC syndrome (Superior vena cava syndrome).

Some of the symptoms of this syndrome are shortness of breath, swelling and they may appear because inserted catheter blocks blood flow.

Researchers claim that SVC syndrome can be prevented if catheters are used only for a short period of time.Treatments for SVC syndrome include thrombolutic therapy (pharmalogically disolved blood clots), surgical reconstruction that re-opens blood flow or PTA (percutaneous transluminal balloon angioplasty)
