Clarification on 'staging' of cancer of uterus and what the numbers mean

Question Can you tell me if a 'stage 1' result from a D & C with biopsies means the same as when one has a 'pap smear' and it's a level 1? One family member has to have a hysterectomy due to the result from a D & C and another family member had to have a hysterectomy last year due to a 'grade 3' from a pap smear. Is one more serious than the other or do they mean the same thing? It can be very confusing when you hear all the 'levels', staging, etc.
