Cold and cough meds dangerous for toddlers

Examination of roughly 800 medicines that are popular and often used for cold and cough has shown that not all of them are safe and effective in treating children.

Food and drug administration safety officials recommend that cold and cough medicines should not be used in children under 2 and antihistamines in those younger than 6 years and that drug companies should add a warning that the drugs are not to be used to sedate young children.

Report on side effects of these medications found 54 cases of children death related with decongestant medicine made with pseudoephedrine, phenylephrine or ephedrine. Also, 69 reports of deaths related with antihistamine medicines made of diphenhydramine, brompheniramine or chlorpheniramine. Report found that about 1500 children in a two year period wound up in ER because of the drugs and most of the deaths were children younger than 2.

FDA gave drug companies until end of October to stop selling any unapproved medicines labeled for use by children under 6 that contain painkiller and hydrocodone.
