Many people around the world in the disease of Cancer that begins in the colon is called colon cancer, and cancer that begins in the rectum is called rectal cancer. Cancers affecting either of these organs may also be called colorectal cancer.Colorectal cancer ranks as the second leading cause of cancer death in the United States and accounts for 10% of deaths from all forms of cancer.Colon cancer affects both men and women about equally. Surgery is the primary treatment and results in cure in approximately 58 % of patients. Yet this form of cancer is one of the most treatable with an almost 100 % cure rate in the earliest stages.
