|
|
I have had a swollen salivary gland for about ten weeks. At first it didn't hurt but now it feels hard and I have numbness in the neck and face. Some days it doesn't bother me and other days it is very annoying.
I had a dye test of the salivary gland and a cat scan. The dye test came up negative (no stones or blockages) but the cat scan showed nodules on the thyroid. Today I had a biopsy of the thyroid. Do not have the results yet. The endocrinologist said that the swollen gland does not have anything to do with the nodules on the thyroid.
I am happy to find out that I am not the only person with this swollen gland. I have a trip planned in three weeks (a ten day cruise) and I don't know whether or not to cancel it. I don't want to get sick on a cruise ship. If the biopsy of the thyroid comes back positive, then I will have to have surgery of the thyroid. Just have to wait for the results. |

| That was my ENT's exact words. He said it was major sugery and would not do it unless they found a tumor, or I insisted. He said it was very risky surgery becauce of the possibility of nerve damage that could leave me with a sagging face on that side. |

The pain and swelling subsides if I use a cold compress for about a half hour. She put me on Cipro (antibiotic) and told me to suck on a lemon. I think this will be quite painful, but if it works, I'll do it.
Anyone else have this experience? Please help. |
I have experienced a swollen gland (parotid) on my left side under my ear and in the cheek area for about a year off and on now. It mostly occurs after I eat something sweet or sour. I just went to an oral surgeon today to discuss this, and he acknowledged that it was an irritated salivary duct but did not see any stones in my x-ray.
Going a more holistic route, the lemon is a very good idea, as it does clear out that duct by creating saliva to flush it out...but I have had to look deeper at the true cause of it, and have a feeling it is Candida related and won't completely heal until I rid the area of the yeast. This may be something to take in to consideration for you both, and don't take the antibiotics unless completely necessary!
If it is candida related the antibiotics will only make things worse, trust me, that's how I developed the overgrowth in the first place was antibiotic overuse because of confused and rushed doctors. Birth control was another huge factor in the overgrowth also for me. I hope this helps...Candida is another huge can of worms, so I won't drag you with the details, but it is a possible underlying cause! |

This may be your problem! I also have the swollen glands. I'm heading to the DRs. tomorrow to show him what I've found.
Do the symptoms sound familiar?

| I'm pretty horrified by these posts that I'm reading. I can't believe some of you have gone on as long as you have with this problem. I was diagnosed with a swollen salivary gland yesterday. I got my diagnosis from an oral surgeon. He put me on antibiotics and pain meds right away. In addition, he is in the process of scheduling a CAT scan for me. Apparently, two of the most common reasons for swollen salivary glands are blockage due to a "stone" (calcium deposit) or a benign tumor. If that is the case, the blockage MUST be removed. If you haven't yet been to an oral surgeon - that's the place to go! |
