Continued pain from Revision Hip Replacement

I had my first hip replacement done 18 years ago. Everything was fine until a couple years ago when I began experiencing more and more pain. I went back to my original surgeon who eventually determined that I needed a revision.
I had the revision hip replacement done about 8 months ago. The surgeon said the original replacement had gotten loose. I am still experiencing quite a bit of pain. My range of motion is very limited and the leg is very weak. I have excersied the leg since the last surgery but even now it is too painful to do too much exercise.
My surgeon says the xrays look fine. However, he said if the pain continues he wants to do a bone scan.
Is this normal? What could be causing the pain?
