Hey there,
I really would be surprised if it turned out to be anthing serious... Smoking cigs and weed DOES build up alot of tar in your lungs. The coloured gunk coming off your lungs IS tar. it can range from brown to dark green to black! The pain in yout chest is because your lungs are working very hard to remove this crap!!! you are growing new cilia (very good). Be patient! you should see a doctor to give yourself piece of mind. I smoked weed (hydro) for about 12 years several times per day (about 15-20 cones) and a pack of cigs per day for 7 years. I have quit both about 3 months ago and I still have tar coming up however day by day it is getting less... I hope this helps

I /will/ say that it has nothing to do with smoking pot. The black stuff is tar from cigarettes, not resin from marijuana smoke. You could tell in the taste, if you let the phlegm stick in your mouth, you'll notice a mild charcoal-like flavour, as opposed to a taste that all pot smokers would recognize.

I'm not telling anyone to smoke weed, I'm just saying to blame the real culprit -> Cigarettes

I quit smoking cigarettes a week and a half ago and the black stuff has just started coming out a few days ago, and I have yet to stop smoking marijuana.

PostPosted: 04/15/08 - 11:56    Post subject: excessive pot smikin and grey and black mucus specs Vote now! Reply with quote

I have smoked pot for a long time and quit many times. I started smoking cigs in Jr. High and quit years ago at 21. At 28 I am still battling with pot smokin' and have read all your posts. I am also still scared after reading them like other have mentioned, maybe because I seem to be older than some of you, and have smoked for 14 yrs.. One of you mentioned that you felt short of breath and fatigued too; me also. Hey, did you ever get the PET scan, did your Dr. recommend it? I never had allergies as a child and jus this year I developed major allergies and get severe sinus infections if I don't take medicine. Does all this have to do with smoking pot, do any real Dr.s reply on this forum? My husband also smokes pot (no cigs, never did) and we have matching smoker coughs (cute huh?) but I have the grey/black crap in the mucus and he does not. Any ideas or recommendations? I have quit because I'm away from any access but will return home to much temptation since where I live it's now "medicine". While I'm clear headed I thought I would like to try to get to the bottom of this mystery....ANY HELP?

PostPosted: 04/17/08 - 17:40    Post subject: WATER!!! Vote now! Reply with quote

OK so after 27 years of cigarettes and weed, I quit smoking two weeks ago. This time around, instead of telling myself no smoking, I keep saying yes, healthy lungs or yes, smoke free. It is amazing how much easier just that little trick can make it to want to stay smoke free. Whenever you get the urge, don't say no to yourself, say yes to something else.

Also, I am smoking up all kinds of dark, dark brown stuff. I also did when I smoked. My pulmonary doctor actually told me to be thankful and that coughing it all up was probably helping me to not get cancer or emphysema...so it's a good thing.

After much discussion and many prescriptions, my pulmonary doctor also told me that water, by far, is the best medicine. She said that while the medical industry prescribes more and more, most doctors fail to admit that staying hydrated (at least 8 8oz glasses or water a day - I usually drink a gallon to two a day but not too much to get water toxification). Also eliminate as much caffeine as possible as this will dehydrate you more.

Anyway, all, keep saying yes to no smoking, drink lots of water and BREATHE!!!

OK, Has anyone thought of cutting up an air filter and putting into the neck of a bong to catch all of this tar that is being expelled out in the phlegm? Would it work?

Just so you guys know, you can always VAPORIZE your weed... doesn't anybody know about this? Most of what is being said above is true, but this doesn't mean you need to give up cannabis entirely.

Cigarettes are one thing, since they're PROVEN to be harmful. Vaporizing your buds instead of smoking them is much healthier, and is only a little more damaging to your lungs than a hot shower. You get the benefits of bronchial dilation without the excessive tar buildup.

Keep toking!

PostPosted: 06/12/08 - 05:23    Post subject: a black phlegm solution? Vote now! Reply with quote

I also have been battling with this grey phlegm for a year now. I even have this skin discoloration around the sides of my neck. It got so bad that sometimes I would even cough up huge black goo, and I do mean very black. It was very very scary, I am talking a few ounces of scary looking globs of dark goo.
After trying all kinds of things I have finally beaten it. keep in mind, I am a smoker of weed for over twenty years, and I beat this without stopping, even though stopping smoking would have been an easier solution. First of all, exercise, really get breathing to the point where you are coughing up all kinds of funk. I even have gone running while munching on romaine lettuce and this really gets the juices going and loosens all of the goo. so much easier to get it out when it is wet and loose rather than dry.
The other really big helper is probiotics, I just got turned onto this bio k plus, and it is incredible. It is expensive but is the best and really kicks butt. I am finally getting my energy back, and the black stopped in a couple of days! Good luck to you and know that you can beat this, so don't be scared. Oh, and also very important to avoid any sugar or sweetened foods, such as soda and candy, also very important not to drink alcohol,,, but this is only necessary for a short time until you fully recover.
