Hi,

My fingertips have been peeling to the point of cracking and bleeding for the last 4 months. My doctor prescribed "Prednison E" twice and an ointment, "Clobetasol Propionate" which I apply twice a day.

The meds, seem to help for a couple of weeks, but the peeling, cracking and sometimes bleeding just come right back.

Is there someone out there who can give me some clue to what is going on. My work is 99% computer and it hurts to type.

I wonder if I am allergic to latex gloves which I use constantly for washing dishes and cleaning.

Thanks to all suggestions and comments.

About 2 weeks ago I was picking up gloves to use to protect my suffering fingers (dry, flaking, etc.) so I could do some gardening. I then noticed a box of vinyl gloves that said "Latex Free" and it hit me: I had been using plastic gloves regularly over the past few years, often to help treat the psoriasis on one of my hands (application of prescribed cream, plastic gloves left on the affected hand for several hours or overnight would *sometimes* help relive the scales and itching). What if I were, in fact, ALLERGIC to the gloves??
So I picked up the box of latex-free gloves, thinking I'd found the answer to my flaky-fingers problem. Imagine my disappointment, though, when I arrived home to find that, in my medicine cabinet, the "guilty" gloves WERE already "latex free"! So, there was no magical answer there, for me...
My point is, I think the flaking dry fingers problem is a little more COMPLEX than simply being allergic or sensitive to one thing.
You said the meds seemed to help for a couple of weeks, and then the problem came back. Had your meds run out? Or were you still using them when the skin problem reocurred?
Of course, you should try the latex glove test, and stop using them to see if they, indeed, might be the culprit. I do hope that IS IT, and you are on the way to being pain/ailment free soon! Just relating to you MY story, on the chance that yours is similar (and does not just "go away") and hope you'll join the other discussion on this topic "Peeling and Sore fingertips symptoms at http://www.steadyhealth.com/viewtopic.php?t=53692&hpr=Peeling_and_sore_fingertips_symptoms

More than 30% of all Americans ARE sensitive to latex, to some degree or another. In addition, latex sensitive must watch for something called a "cross-reactive" which involves a variety of foods, most commonly the number is less than 40. A few people are so severely reactive to latex (most of the ones I know were career nurses) that they cannot leave their home. A study in the United Kingdom [Britain] found that the most sensitive people cannot tolerate the amount of latex found in food wrappings. Connect with the latex allergy site, have your doctor test you...but I would suggest that you avoid latex. It has been proven that every exposure to latex simply will increase the chance that you have a severe or fatal allergic reaction to latex in the future. Depending on how your tests come out, you may want to carry an epi-pen for emergencies. Again, talk to your Doc. and good luck!
