Women who lose too much weight soon after delivery are putting their next babies at risk. Gaining too much weight can be just as dangerous as it may bring harm to both mother and her baby.

Any rapid weight changes i.e. weight fluctuations between two pregnancies can increase the risk of babies suffering high blood pressure, and of premature or stillbirth.

Health experts are urging women to maintain a healthy weight before, during and after pregnancy to give their children the best start in life and keep themselves safe.

Women are under a lot of pressure to lose the weight they gained during pregnancy. They often forget about the basic rules of eating healthy, exercising and breastfeeding. Media and celebrities are not being helpful in the situation and are actually making it harder and increasing the stress. Some women even lose more weight and end up thinner than they were before getting pregnant.

The biggest problem seems to be lack of knowledge of what effects could fluctuating weight have on unborn children. Studies showed that dramatic weight changes are putting strains on the woman’s body and could harm the child leading to premature births and impaired growths as well as putting women in dangers of developing diabetes and pre-eclampsia.

Researchers warn that pregnancy is one of the nutritionally most demanding periods of a woman's life in which an adequate supply of nutrients is essential to the fetal wellbeing and growth.
