Researchers were surprised to find out that depressed people that get married actually experience an enormous decrease in their negative symptoms.

This result was not what it was expected. It seems that just caring for someone could help boost mood and alleviate symptoms of depression. And not only that. A need for the intimacy, emotional closeness and the social support that marriage can provide may be just what a depressed person needs.

The research was done on 3,066 people whose symptoms were measured both before and after their first marriage. Marriage had a dramatic increase in the symptoms.

On the other hand, people who were happy and married a depressed person were very likely to develop depression themselves.
