It seems that one of my friends who suffer from epilepsy is severely depressed and because of that he has seizures more often and intensive. What is the link between epilepsy and depression?
Beside the anxiety depression is a common occurrence among epileptic patients. The relationship between depression and epilepsy is two-directional. Patients with major depression also have a higher frequency of epilepsy. More characteristically they present as an atypical depression, which can often go unrecognized. Although antidepressant drugs have been used in epileptic patients, there has only been one controlled study… the family of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). They should be considered as initial therapy for depressive disorders in these patients.
