For all the people above the age of fifty, scientists from the San Francisco Veterans Affairs Medical Center developed a test that could calculate and determine their risk of death in the following four yours. The test is of course not 100% accurate but gives an approximate idea of the survival chances.

It works by adding appropriate number of points to the statement that refers to you. You may need a blank piece of paper and a pen to write down your scores.

Write down:

1. 1point if your age is: 60-64; 2 points if you are 65-69; 3 points if you’re 70-74; 4 points for 75-79; 5 points if you’re 80-84 and 7 points if you’re older than 85
2. add 2 points if you are male
3. 1 point if your body-mass index is less than 25 (you calculate your BMI by multiplying height in inches times height in inches and then divide weight in pounds by that total; then multiply the total by 703.)
4. 2 points for diabetes
5. 2 points for Cancer (do not include minor skin cancers):
6. 2 points for chronic lung disease that limits activities or requires oxygen use at home
7. 2 points for congestive heart failure
8. 2 points for smoking
9. 2 points for having problems showering because of a health or memory problem
10. 2 points for problems regarding money managing, paying bills, keeping track of expenses because of a health or memory problem
11. 2 points for not being able to walk several blocks because of a health problem
12. 1 point for not being able to push, pull or move large objects like a living room chair because of a health problem

Now sum up and check the results:

If you have scored 0-5 points-you have less than 4% risk of dying; 6-9 points show 15% risk; 10-13 points-42 % risk; and 14 or more points means 64 % risk.
