Developed Herpes Labialis while pregnant?

Hello! I have been having problems with cold sores for years. If my immune system becomes too weak, or if I got a flue, or if I am under stress for some period of time I always end up with cold sores. I used to take Valtrex when I felt the first symptom in two separate doses just for one day and it usually relieves my pain and burn. Now, I am in third month of pregnancy and I didn't take Valtrex, so my lips are in terrible condition. Is there any other way to tranquilize the symptoms?

Hi! First of I would like to wish you all the best and a healthy baby. You did the right thing by not taking the Valtrex since there are no controlled studies on pregnant women and it should be used only if the benefit justifies the potential risk to the baby – which is usually not the case. You should drink lot of water, or any other liquid, to prevent dehydration and you should talk to your doctor if you need pain relief medicines – don't take any on your own.
