I've just been prescribed Dexedrine, however i've been taking Zoloft (sertraline hcl) for the past two years.
I've heard of interactions between the two drugs, enhancing some of the side effects.
If both drugs are taken, will the desired effects (increased concentration etc.) be altered, or is it just the side effects, themselves?

thanks Smile

There is some overlap between how the liver processes both drugs. ZOLOFT primarily uses CYP2B6 enzyme but to a lesser extent CYP2D6 which dexedrine primarily uses to metabolize.

This means that there will be SOME potentiation of both drugs so lower doses may be necessary. If taken both together, they will metabolize more slowly as they are both fighting for the same enzyme to process them. This means they will stay in your bloodstream longer and may also increase in potency.
I do not think the potentiation will be substantial though because ZOLOFT uses CYP2B6 as its primary metabolizer.

Lots of doctors prescribe them concurrently for those who have comorbid anxiety and ADHD. The ZOLOFT reduces the anxiety that sometimes dexedrine exacerbates. STRATTERA may be an alternative 1 drug solution if you are female and have this Anxiety/ADHD comorbidity but for males, sexual and urinary retention side effects can cause a problem.
