High doses of anti-rejection drugs that are used nowadays for cell transplant are not at all safe for children.

UK scientists have developed a new method of cell transplant that could help cure diabetes in 10 days time. The new method involves removing islets cells from the donor pancreas in highly sterile conditions and injecting them directly into the patient’s liver. The scientists believe that by using this procedure will they will manage to reverse diabetes in both children and adults.

The main goal besides reversing the condition is to end patient’s need for daily insulin injections and pancreas transplants and prevent the long-term conditions of the disease such as blindness and kidney failure that usually develop 20 to 30 years later.

It will certainly take another five to ten years of the method’s improvement and perfection but as the saying goes “better late than never"
