Hi, my son is 17 years old and these days all he talks about is piercing and tattoos. It's not like I will forbid him that, but I would like to know if his desire for that means a cry for help? Is it necessary for me to talk to him about it, I know that adolescent age might be very difficult?
It is true that those years represent a period of self questioning, discovering the world and independence in every possible way. I also have tattoos and I must admit that I never lacked attention from my parents. Have you thought that he maybe just likes tattoos and piercing? Maybe that is his way of saying – hey world, here I am, look at me! No danger in that...

not exactly a cry for help.. but it is the need for acceptance he thinks he'll gain from it. Just reinforce in your son that he doesn't need to do those things for acceptance; instead just be himself, and be confident in that. Exercise is a GREAT confidence builder.
