Hello! My sister has two years old son and she always has problems when she wants to take him to sleep. He is always crying and doesn't want to go. Sometimes she stays with him for two or three hours in his bedroom in order to make him sleep. I heard that paracetamol can be used as a sedative since it has no side effects at all and it is the safest medicine in treatment of fever and pain. Does paracetamol really have sedative effects?

Hi! Well, you said that paracetamol is considered to be the safest drug in treatment of pain and fever and it's true. But, it can not be used as a sedative since it is not a sedative. It, of course, has some sedative effects but it is not the direct effect of the drug itself. Some doctor thinks that is makes you sleepy, in a similar way as alcohol, due to some toxic reactions inside the body. Your sister has to find the cause and try to solve the problem without any medications. She should talk to his pediatrician as well.
