Does enlarged pituitary gland necesarilly mean tumor?

Hello! My mother used to be very healthy women. Her problems started few months ago. Her menstrual period suddenly stopped but she thought the reason was menopause. Then she started to feel severe headache and problems with her vision. Her doctor did some hormone test and he was not happy with the results. Soon after that he discovered enlarged pituitary gland. Does enlarged pituitary gland necessarily mean tumor?

Hello! Enlargement of the pituitary gland is usually connected to a tumor. There are also few other situation that may cause enlargement. Bleeding in the gland or a disease such as tuberculosis or sarcoidosis can also cause enlargement. Headache is one of common symptoms of enlarged pituitary gland. Vision problems can also occur since the gland often presses on the optic nerve. Treatment will depend on the cause of the enlargement.
