Hi, I am considering donating a kidney because I have a friend who almost died recently from kidney failure. I don’t know anything about this procedure. Can you tell me something about it? Do I have to be a living donator, or can it be done when I die?

Everyone who is willing to donate a kidney is unselfish, brave and generous. There are many people and children whose life depends on this. There are more transplantations of cadaver kidneys than those form living persons. Cadaver kidneys usually go to someone from the waiting list, but living persons usually donate kidneys to a relative, spouse or a friend. Even if you volunteer as a kidney donator, you may be turned down. First you have to go through many tests to be sure that you have no other diseases that can be worsen by giving away a kidney. Beside that it is important that a kidney you’re giving away is healthy. Those tests are usually contained of urine testing, blood tests, a 24 hour urine collection, electrocardiogram, chest x-ray and ultrasound of your kidneys. Females will also have to do a PAP smear and mammogram.
