Duodenal atresia is a condition in which the duodenum hasn’t developed properly, by that I mean it is not open and cannot allow the passage of stomach contents. The cause is unknown, but it is thought to result from problems during the embryologic stage in which the duodenum normally changes from solid to tube-like. It is rare 1 in 10,000 live births and approximately 20-30% of infants with Duodenal Atresia have Downs’s syndrome. It is often associated with other congenital abnormalities. Surgery to correct the duodenal blockage is necessary, but is not an emergency and The approach will depend on the nature of the abnormality.
